Accreditation in higher education
is a collegial process based on self and peer assessment. Its purpose is the improvement of academic quality and public accountability. This continuing quality control process occurs usually every five to ten years.
Regionally accredited colleges are mostly academically-oriented, non-profit or state-owned institutions.
Why Accreditation ?
Accreditation offers the opportunity for a Higher Education institution to be recognized as an entity that offers quality education and research for the good of society. An accreditation process reveals deficiencies in quality and management errors. It places the institution’s credibility and reputation at risk.
Thus, if an institution does not prepare for and believe that accreditation is for a greater good, it will be unable to handle the collateral effects that arise along the way.
